Strength

Very strong

About 103 bits of entropy. Every extra bit doubles the guesses needed to find it.

How it works

  1. Choose a type

A random password for most accounts, a passphrase for one you must type or remember, or a PIN.

  2. Set the length and characters

Longer is stronger. The meter shows the strength as you change the settings.

  3. Copy it into your password manager

Copy the password and save it straight into your password manager, then generate a new one for the next account.

Questions people ask

  • Is it safe to generate a password on a website?

This one is generated on your device by your browser's cryptographic random generator, the same one used for encryption. It is never sent over the internet, stored or logged, and a new one is made each time.

  • How long should a password be?

At least 16 characters for important accounts such as email and banking. Length adds more strength than symbols do, which is why a passphrase of six or more random words is both strong and easy to type.

  • How is the strength worked out?

From the number of possible passwords the settings allow, measured in bits of entropy. Every extra bit doubles the guesses an attacker needs. Around 80 bits or more is very strong for anything you protect with a password.

  • Where should I keep my passwords?

In a password manager, such as the one built into your phone or browser. Use a different password for every account, and turn on two-step verification wherever it is offered.
