  • How is reading time worked out?

    Words divided by 238 a minute, the average silent reading speed measured for adults reading English non-fiction. Speaking time uses 130 words a minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or a video.

  • What counts as a word?

    Any run of letters or numbers between spaces. Hyphenated words and contractions, such as well-known and don't, count once. A dash or symbol on its own does not count.

  • Does it work for Urdu and Arabic?

    Yes. Words are counted by the spaces between them, so Urdu, Arabic and other languages written with spaces count correctly, and characters are counted the way you see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once.

  • Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

    No. The tool runs in your browser, on your device. Nothing you type is sent to Xsofty or saved anywhere, and it is gone when you close the page.
